How a component is supplied, whether by tape and reel, tray, tube, cut tape, or custom reel, can impact automated assembly, handling risks, lot control, moisture protection, production efficiency, and purchase cost.


A part might be technically correct, but using the wrong packaging format can still cause manufacturing problems. For example, a contract manufacturer with automated pick-and-place equipment may need tape-and-reel material with a specific orientation. A prototype team may only need a small amount in cut tape. A high-pin-count QFP may need tray packaging to protect its leads during transport and assembly.


Before requesting a quote, buyers should specify the exact manufacturer part number and the required packaging format.

Tape and reel: the standard choice for automated SMT assembly

Tape-and-reel packaging places individual components in cavities along a carrier tape. A cover tape seals the components into place, and the tape is wound onto a reel.

This is the most common format for high-volume surface-mount assembly because it feeds directly into pick-and-place machines.


A standard tape-and-reel configuration includes:
