The TMC8100 is a dedicated serial protocol converter IC, especially for absolute encoder bus protocols. It operates as a bus controller for these protocols and as a peripheral with either a serial peripheral interface (SPI) or universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter (UART) interface connection attached microcontroller/motion controller delivering the extracted and adjusted encoder position information.

It integrates a programmable high performance serial communication engine for synchronous and asynchronous data up-to 16Mb/s. In addition to a clock generator, several counter/timer units, a programmable CRC generator and direct I/Os for connecting bus transceivers, standard SPI, 2x UART, and I²C interfaces are available.
